Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide

We stock and install HeatShield-compatible chimney caps in Houston for a typical installed price of $285 to $540, depending on flue dimensions and access. Most HeatShield cap installations run 45 to 90 minutes and are booked within a few days, not same-day. You probably landed here because your existing cap is rusting through at the base or lifted off entirely during one of Houston’s spring squalls, and you want a straight answer on what it costs to fix it.

The honest truth: a chimney cap failing is rarely an emergency. It’s a slow problem that turns into an expensive one if water keeps getting down the flue into a HeatShield liner system that was never designed to sit wet. Hank Delano put it plainly on a recent Montrose job: “Tell me what you’re seeing, I’ll tell you what it costs to fix it.” That’s how we work.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield manufacturer’s caps are sized to the outside diameter of their liner systems, not the inside dimension of the flue. That means a cap listed as a 6-inch unit is built to fit over a 6-inch HeatShield liner, and it won’t seal correctly on a different brand’s 6-inch pipe. If you measure the inside of your clay tile and order based on that number alone, you’ll buy the wrong part about half the time in Houston’s older homes, where tile liners have settled and shifted.

We pull the cap and measure the liner outside diameter directly before specifying a replacement. HeatShield systems installed after roughly 2010 use a rolled-seam construction that takes a slip-fit cap with a built-in screen; earlier systems often had a cap that clamped onto the top plate. It’s a small difference that causes a lot of re-orders. HeatShield-branded caps are what we recommend for HeatShield liners, full stop. There are generic aftermarket caps that will technically fit, but the screen gap and the wind-brace geometry are different enough that we’ve seen them rattle loose within two years. On a liner system that costs what HeatShield costs, the cap is not where you want to save fifty dollars.

We’re an independent Houston chimney service company. We install HeatShield products and work with their components regularly, but we’re not an authorized HeatShield dealer or a corporate affiliate. We also stock and work with DuraFlex and Gelco systems, which matters if your liner is actually a different brand wearing an old HeatShield cap.

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Water staining on the ceiling near the chimney chase. This usually means the cap’s top plate has rusted through and water is running down the outside of the liner instead of staying out of the flue. The fix is a cap replacement, but we check the liner for rust while we’re up there.
  • You can hear the cap rattling during Houston’s afternoon thunderstorms. The wind brace or the set screws have loosened. A rattling cap is working its way toward a lifted cap, and a lifted cap is what lets a full Texas downpour straight down the flue.
  • Rust streaks running down the side of the chimney or chase top. The cap body itself is failing. HeatShield caps are stainless or galvanized depending on the model; once the galvanization goes in Houston’s humidity-and-salt air mix, the base ring is next.
  • Birds or squirrels getting into the house through the fireplace. The screen mesh has torn or pulled out at the seam. Houston squirrels are persistent, and a torn screen is an open door. We’ve pulled nests out of flues that backed up smoke into living rooms.
  • You found the cap sitting in the yard after a storm. This one is self-explanatory, but the underlying cause matters: sometimes the cap corroded, sometimes the installers didn’t anchor it properly to begin with. We’ll tell you which one it was when we see it.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Installed HeatShield chimney cap replacement in Houston runs $285 to $540 for most single-flue residential jobs. The price breaks down as the cap unit itself ($140 to $260 depending on size and whether it’s the standard cap or the deluxe model with the taller screen) plus the labor, which includes getting on the roof, removing the old cap, prepping the liner top, setting and anchoring the new cap, and a quick inspection of the top few feet of liner while we’re there.

What pushes the price toward the top of the range: a steep roof pitch that needs a safety harness and extra setup time, a chase-mounted cap on a two-story home, or a liner top that needs minor corrections before the new cap seats properly. What pushes it down: a simple single-flue cap on a single-story roof with a walkable pitch.

Every job we do gets one written price before work starts. The cap, the labor, the disposal, the cleanup. If a covered repair fails within one full year from the service date, we come back at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s in writing on every repair invoice we hand out in Houston. All work carries our warranty terms; done right, done once.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can do safely from the ground: look at the cap with binoculars and note if it’s leaning, rusted through, missing its screen, or gone entirely. Note any staining or rust streaks on the chimney exterior. That’s useful information to have when you call, because it helps us bring the right parts on the first visit.

What we don’t recommend doing yourself: getting on the roof to swap the cap. Working on a chimney top means working around a flue opening, often on a pitch, often in wind, and the cap itself sets under specific tension. This falls into the same category as high-reach work: one slip near the chase edge is a life-changing injury. It’s not worth trading a $300 repair for that risk. If you can hand us the cap through a window and give us roof access, we’ll handle the rest. Call (325) 750-6259 and we’ll get you a written quote before anything comes off the truck.
