Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Flue Liner Replacement: The Houston Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Gelco-compatible flue liner replacement systems throughout Houston, and a full reline typically runs $1,800 to $3,400 installed depending on liner length, diameter, and access. Most Gelco liner replacements we schedule are back on the calendar within a week, not a month. Owners usually discover the problem the same way: a Level 2 inspection shows cracking or separation in the existing Gelco liner, or they find flue tile debris at the base of the firebox after a season of heavy use. If you’re seeing pieces of liner or a rust-colored powder around your damper, that’s your signal to stop burning and get eyes on the flue before the next Houston cold front arrives.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco manufactures rigid stainless flue liners in both single-wall and double-wall configurations, and the replacement path depends on which one you have. Single-wall Gelco liners, common in straight-run masonry chimneys, are the most straightforward to swap. Double-wall insulated Gelco liners, typically specified for exterior masonry chimneys or wood stove applications, require matching the insulation wrap as well as the inner diameter. The sizing has to be exact: Gelco liners are matched to the appliance collar and the flue’s inside dimension, and in Houston we regularly see older homes where a 6-inch liner was squeezed into a 13×13 clay tile flue without proper insulation. That’s a code issue waiting to become a firebox smoke problem. Flint Chimney Co Houston is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Gelco, so our recommendation is based on what the chimney actually needs, not on any manufacturer quota. We’ll verify your existing liner’s size, condition, and connection points before quoting anything.

Signs Your Gelco Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing
- Flue tile chips or metal fragments in the firebox. When a Gelco liner starts separating at a seam or corroding through from moisture, small pieces end up on the smoke shelf or firebox floor. That’s not normal ash, and it means the liner is shedding material.
- Rust staining or water streaks on the firebox walls. Houston humidity is merciless on metal. A failing liner lets condensation and rain migrate into the masonry, and the rust trails show up long before the liner itself becomes visible. We see this constantly in older Montrose and Heights homes.
- Smoke backing into the room when you open the doors mid-burn. A cracked or collapsed Gelco liner changes the draft. The chimney can’t pull effectively, so the smoke finds the path of least resistance, which is back into your living room.
- A sulfur or sharp metallic smell during or after fires. This is combustion gases lingering in the flue instead of venting. It may also indicate creosote buildup on a rough or damaged liner surface. Either way, it’s a carbon monoxide conversation, not just a nuisance.
- Visible gaps or separation on a liner you can see from the top. If you have roof access and can look down the flue, you may catch a seam that has opened. Most homeowners won’t see this themselves, which is why we document it with a camera during inspections.
Safety note: a compromised flue liner is not a cosmetic issue. It is the barrier between hot combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, and your home’s framing. If you’re seeing any of the signs above, stop using the fireplace until it’s inspected.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, a complete Gelco flue liner replacement generally lands between $1,800 and $3,400 installed. The spread comes from three factors: total flue height, whether the chimney is interior or exterior masonry, and whether the old liner comes out cleanly or fights us on the way down. Here’s how that breaks down:
- Straight interior chimney, 15 – 25 foot run: $1,800 – $2,400
- Two-story home or exterior chimney requiring insulation: $2,400 – $3,000
- Degraded clay tile that requires breakout before reline: add $400 – $800
- Crown repair or top plate replacement, if needed: $300 – $600
Every quote includes the liner, insulation where specified, top plate and rain cap if they’re part of the scope, camera verification after install, and haul-away of the old liner. And because this is Flint Chimney Co Houston, the written price you approve is the price you pay. The 365-Day Done Right Promise applies to every liner replacement we install: if a covered failure happens within one year, we return and fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
An owner can do one thing safely: look inside the firebox with a flashlight and check for rust, debris, or visible liner damage. That inspection costs you nothing and gives us useful information when you call. The actual liner replacement is not a weekend project. It requires roof access, proper rigging to pull the old liner without damaging the clay tile, and correct mechanical connections at the appliance and the top plate. A dropped liner section inside a Houston chimney means at minimum a fishing operation with a camera, and at worst damage to the smoke shelf that turns a $2,000 job into a $5,000 one. This is a trained professional job, full stop. Hank Delano has pulled more failed liners out of Houston chimneys than he can count, and he’ll tell you the same thing: “Tell me what you’re seeing, I’ll tell you what it costs to fix it.” Call (325) 750-6259 and we’ll get you on the schedule for a real inspection with camera documentation before anyone touches a single tool.
Frequently Asked Questions
A properly installed Gelco stainless liner should last 20 to 25 years in Houston’s climate, but that assumes the chimney crown is in good shape and the liner was insulated correctly from day one. Uninsulated exterior liners in humid Houston conditions can fail in 10 to 12 years because condensation on the steel accelerates corrosion. We also work with DuraFlex and HeatShield liners when the application calls for them, and we’ll specify whichever system matches your chimney’s actual conditions rather than whichever one is easier to order. Call (325) 750-6259 for an inspection and we’ll tell you honestly how many seasons your current liner has left.
Small seam separations can sometimes be reconnected, but a corroded or structurally compromised Gelco liner cannot be safely patched. Stainless liners fail through metal fatigue and corrosion, neither of which is fixable with a patch kit. Anyone offering a cheap repair on visibly rusted or split liner material is not doing you a service. We’ll show you the camera footage and explain exactly what can be saved and what can’t. Call (325) 750-6259 to schedule a Level 2 inspection with the camera documentation included.
A standard single-story straight-run replacement is typically a one-day job, usually done by early afternoon. Two-story homes or chimneys with difficult liner extraction can stretch into a second day because we don’t rush the demolition phase. The work includes protecting the floor and furniture around the fireplace, running a full draft test, and leaving you with camera-verified proof the liner is seated correctly. We schedule the job and the crew arrives when we say they will.
We keep common 6-inch and 8-inch Gelco-compatible liner sections on the truck for straightforward replacements, but specific lengths and insulation kits are pulled from our Houston supplier network by job. That means no multi-week wait for freight to arrive from out of state. When we quote your replacement, we’ll tell you exactly what’s being ordered and how long it takes to be on-site. Call (325) 750-6259 for a free estimate and we’ll walk you through the exact materials needed for your chimney.
