Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Damper Repair: The Houston Owner’s Guide
Gelco damper repair in Houston typically runs $225 to $465 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the cast-iron frame, the damper blade, or the full top-sealing assembly. We stock Gelco-compatible parts on our trucks, so most damper jobs are done in a single visit. Most Houston homeowners find us the same way: they notice a cold draft in the fireplace during a January cold snap, or they see daylight through the closed damper when they crouch down and look up past the lintel.
The damper is the cast-iron or steel door that seals the firebox from the chimney when there’s no fire. On a Gelco unit, that door sits either in the throat just above the firebox, or at the top of the flue on a top-sealing model. When it stops holding closed, you lose conditioned air up the chimney year-round, and Houston’s humidity makes the problem worse by speeding up rust on the hinge pins and blade edges. We fix it, replace it, and put the price in writing before we touch anything.
Gelco Damper Repair: The Houston Owner’s Guide
If you have a Gelco damper that won’t close, we carry the repair parts for the most common Gelco throat dampers and top-sealing models. A typical installed repair runs $225 to $465 in Houston, and most jobs are completed the same day. The symptom that sends most people looking is a cold draft in the fireplace during the winter, or rust flakes falling into the firebox when the damper is moved. We see it every week in this city.
Gelco dampers are cast iron or steel, and when they fail in Houston, humidity is usually the accomplice. The blade warps, the hinge pins seize, or the handle rod strips where it connects to the frame. You can fight it, or you can call someone who stocks the parts and fixes it once. We do the second one.
Styles & brands we work with

Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco makes two damper families we work with regularly: standard throat dampers that sit just above the firebox, and top-sealing dampers that replace the old cast-iron cap at the top of the chimney. Throat dampers are the more common of the two in Houston’s older brick homes, especially in neighborhoods like Montrose, the Heights, and Bellaire where masonry fireplaces from the 1950s through the 1980s are everywhere.
The fastest way to identify your Gelco model is to open the damper and look for a raised casting number on the blade or frame. Common Gelco throat sizes run 24, 30, 36, and 42 inches wide, measured across the firebox opening, not the flue. Measure the inner width of the firebox where the damper frame sits. If you’re off by an inch, the part won’t seat. That’s the single biggest compatibility gotcha we see when someone tries to match a part themselves, and it’s worse when a house has settled and the firebox opening is no longer square.
Gelco castings are solid. We stock Gelco-compatible replacement blades, frames, and handle assemblies for the common sizes. If a genuine Gelco part is on backorder, we’ll tell you, tell you what the aftermarket equivalent is, and tell you the price difference before you decide anything. We also work with DuraFlex and HeatShield products, so if the damper isn’t the whole story, we can address what else is going on in the flue.
Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing
- Cold air pours into the room when the damper is closed. A properly seated Gelco damper should stop most of the draft. If you can feel cold air on your hand in front of the firebox, the blade is warped, the frame is rusted, or the seal is gone.
- The damper handle won’t stay in position. The handle or lever that operates the damper should hold where you put it. If it drops open on its own, the adjustment nut or the spring tensioner on the handle assembly is worn.
- Rust flakes fall into the firebox when you move the damper. This is the classic Houston pattern. Humidity gets into the flue, condensation forms on the cast iron, and the metal starts shedding. Once the blade edge is pitted, it won’t seal.
- You see daylight through the chimney when looking up from inside. Closed means closed. On a throat damper, you shouldn’t see sky. On a top-sealing damper, the cable mechanism that pulls the seal tight may have stretched or snapped.
- The damper is stuck, either open or shut. A seized damper is usually a hinge pin that’s rusted solid or a frame that’s shifted out of square because the firebox masonry moved. Forcing it almost always cracks the cast iron.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A standard Gelco throat damper replacement in Houston runs $225 to $340 installed. A top-sealing damper, which requires working from the roof and running a new control cable, runs $340 to $465. If the frame is in good shape and only the blade needs replacing, the job lands at the low end. If the entire frame has to be cut out and a new one mortared into place, the price lands at the high end.
Every quote includes the part, the labor, the removal of the old damper, and the cleanup. You get a written price before we start, and the invoice matches the quote. Every repair carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If a covered damper repair fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s the same Garrison Standard every Garrison Partners location follows.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely inspect a Gelco damper yourself. Open the damper, look at the blade edges with a flashlight, check for rust, check for smooth movement. You can clean light surface rust with a wire brush, and sometimes a stuck damper just needs a little graphite lubricant on the hinge pins. Those are safe, useful jobs.
What you shouldn’t do is remove a damper from a firebox you don’t want to damage, because the frame is often mortared or bolted in ways that resist amateur removal. And a top-sealing damper means roof work and cable routing, which is not a weekend project. If the blade is warped or the frame is cracked, the fix is replacement, and it’s faster and cheaper to have it done right than to fight a part that’s failed. Call (325) 750-6259 and we’ll get you a written price that day.
FAQs
A cast-iron Gelco throat damper in Houston typically lasts 20 to 30 years before rust or warping takes it. The humidity here speeds things up compared to a dry climate, and dampers in seldom-used fireplaces tend to fail faster because condensation just sits on the metal.
Sometimes, and it depends on what failed. A loose handle, a worn control cable, or a blade that just needs hinge work can often be repaired. A cracked frame or a badly warped blade generally gets replaced. We’d rather repair it and tell you it’s repaired than sell you a part you didn’t need. Call (325) 750-6259 and we’ll look at it.
A standard throat damper swap takes 90 minutes to two hours once we’re on site. A top-sealing damper takes two to three hours, most of that on the roof. We book it, we show up, and we’re done before the dog gets tired of watching.
We carry Gelco-compatible blades, frames, and handle assemblies for common 24-inch through 42-inch models on our trucks. If your size or model isn’t on the truck, we order it and give you a straight answer on the timeline before you commit to anything. Tell me what you’re seeing, I’ll tell you what it costs to fix it.
