Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Why Houston Homeowners Choose DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning

Flint Chimney Co Houston provides independent DuraFlex chimney cleaning, inspection, and Duraflex repair in Houston, TX. Our technicians work on DuraFlex liners every week, from early 2000s installations in Meyerland ranch homes to recent condominium retrofits in the Galleria area. We’re not a DuraFlex dealer and we don’t pretend to be. What we do is diagnose, clean, and service these specific liner systems with a level of familiarity that only comes from pulling them apart in this city’s humidity for over a decade. Call (325) 750-6259 to schedule a DuraFlex-specific service visit.

Houston’s combination of high humidity, frequent rain, and expansive clay soils creates chimney problems most national advice never mentions. DuraFlex aluminum liners corrode faster here than they do in Dallas or Austin. Clay soil movement in neighborhoods like Meyerland and Braeswood Place puts lateral stress on chimney stacks, which transfers to the liner inside. A DuraFlex system that would last 20 years in Phoenix needs real attention at year 12 here. That’s the reality we work with, and it’s why our DuraFlex service starts with understanding where your liner sits, what’s burning through it, and what the flue around it is doing.

We are an independent service provider. We install genuine DuraFlex components when the existing system warrants it, and we recommend full relining when it doesn’t. No manufacturer relationship muddies that call.

Why Trust Flint Chimney Co Houston for Your DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning?

Our technicians know DuraFlex products by their failure points, not just their catalog numbers. A DuraFlex AL liner on a gas furnace in a 1970s Sharpstown home fails differently than a DuraFlex Pro smooth-wall liner on a townhome retrofit in Midtown. The aluminum liners pit at the seam overlaps when acidic condensate pools near the breech. The Pro liners hold up better against corrosion but show their own issues at coupler joints when the original install forced the liner through an offset. We’ve seen both enough times to know what we’re looking at within the first few feet of a video scope run.

Hank Delano owns Flint Chimney Co Houston. He grew up in Los Angeles and learned the trade at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College before making his way to Texas. He and his crew have been servicing Houston homes for over a decade, including a steady run of jobs in the Montrose area where older masonry fireplaces keep them busy. Hank built his reputation on thorough Level 2 inspections and creosote removal that actually gets done right the first visit. When a DuraFlex liner shows questionable wear, he sketches the trouble spot on a notepad before quoting a dollar. “Tell me what you’re seeing, I’ll tell you what it costs to fix it.” That’s how we work.

Every job gets a written price before any tool comes off the truck. Every repair carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise, a written guarantee valid for one full year from the service date. If a covered repair fails within that window, we return at no charge. No argument, no invoice. That applies to DuraFlex work the same as any other service we perform.

Common DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning Problems We Fix in Houston

  • Pinhole corrosion at DuraFlex AL seam overlaps. Aluminum liners on gas furnaces and water heaters in older Houston homes develop pinholes where acidic condensate collects at the low point near the breech. The humidity here means the condensate never fully dries out between cycles, so the aluminum stays wet longer. We find this most often on 10- to 15-year-old installs in neighborhoods like Westbury and Maplewood, where the original gas appliances were swapped for higher-efficiency units that produce more acidic exhaust.
  • Gaps at the tee connection to the clay tile flue. This is a carbon monoxide risk, not a cosmetic issue. On 10- to 15-year-old DuraFlex installs, the tee body that connects the liner to the appliance breech can separate from the existing clay tile flue. That gap lets CO and flue gases into the chimney chase instead of venting them outside. We find these during Level 2 inspections when the homeowner reports a faint exhaust smell in the house or a CO detector that trips intermittently. Any gap at the tee means the system is done until it’s relined or properly reconnected.
  • Third-degree creosote buildup in corrugated 316L liners. DuraFlex 316L stainless liners on wood-burning systems develop heavy creosote in the corrugated inner wall when the fire burns with restricted air supply. Houston fireplaces often run with the damper half-closed to stretch a small fire on a cool evening. That smoldering burn produces wet, sticky creosote that hardens into a glass-like glaze. The corrugated profile gives it more surface to grip. We break this glaze with a rotary whip attached to our vacuum system, then run a follow-up video scope to confirm the liner walls are clean down to the metal.
  • Liner kinks or spiral seam separation from forced installation. When a DuraFlex liner was forced through an offset or an undersized existing flue, the spiral seam can separate or the liner can kink. This reduces draft and causes smoke rollout into the room when the fire is lit. We see this on older Houston homes in the Heights where the original masonry flue was built with an offset that a previous contractor didn’t account for. The fix isn’t patching. The liner has to come out and a correctly sized kit has to go in.
  • Rust-through at the rain cap on exposed DuraFlex terminations. Houston’s rain and humidity are brutal on exposed metal. Rain caps on DuraFlex systems that weren’t installed with proper drainage pitch will hold water at the base, and that water sits there through Houston’s wet season. The cap rusts through, then water runs down the inside of the liner and accelerates corrosion everywhere else. We replace caps with genuine DuraFlex components and correct the pitch so the next cap doesn’t fail the same way.

DuraFlex Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach

We install genuine DuraFlex components when the existing liner is sound. Rain caps, tee bodies, and couplers come from DuraFlex because aftermarket tolerances can be off by a few thousandths, and a few thousandths at a coupler joint creates a hot spot that burns through in a season or two. We don’t gamble with that on a system that vents combustion gases through your house.

When a DuraFlex liner shows corrosion through the seam or more than one failed joint, we recommend relining with a new kit rather than patching. Here’s the honest math: a repaired seam on an aged liner won’t survive another Gulf Coast summer. The humidity in Houston keeps the metal damp at the repair point, and damp metal at a seam joint is where the next pinhole starts. We’ll tell you when a patch will hold and when it won’t. If it won’t, we’ll say so plainly and give you a written price for the reline before you decide anything.

Our DuraFlex Service Process – Step by Step

  1. 1
Diagnosis. We start with a Level 2 inspection using a video scope. We run the camera from the appliance breech to the termination cap, looking specifically at the seam overlaps, coupler joints, tee connections, and any signs of condensate pooling. If your liner is the problem, we show you the footage. You see what we see before we quote anything.
  2. 2
Repair or reline recommendation. If the liner is sound and the issue is buildup, we clean it. If a component failed but the liner is intact, we replace that component with genuine DuraFlex parts. If the liner has corrosion or separated seams, we recommend a full reline and give you a written price for the specific DuraFlex kit that fits your system.
  3. 3
Service work. For cleaning, we use a rotary whip on corrugated liners and matching brushes for smooth-wall Pro liners. For relines, we size the new DuraFlex kit to the existing flue dimensions, account for any offsets, and pull the old liner before installing the new one. We don’t force liners through tight spots.
  4. 4
Testing and verification. After the work is done, we run the video scope again to verify the liner is seated correctly, all connections are tight, and the draft is moving the way it should. Then we run a smoke test if the system is wood-burning.
  5. 5
Written guarantee. Every repair gets the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. One full year from the service date. If a covered repair fails, we return at no charge. The guarantee is part of the invoice, not a separate upsell.
