Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Olympia Chimney Crown Repair: The Houston Owner’s Guide
If you’ve got an Olympia Chimney cap or crown that’s cracked, rusted through, or pulling away from the flue, we stock compatible replacement crowns and install them for a typical all-in cost of $425 to $890 in Houston, depending on flue size and roof access. Most Olympia crown repairs we quote are completed on the first visit because we carry the common sizes on the truck. You usually find the failure the same way: water staining on the ceiling near the fireplace, a rusty streak running down the chimney chase, or a crown that crumbles when you touch it during a routine sweep. The crown is the concrete or metal cap that seals the top of the chimney around the flue tile, and when it fails, water gets into the masonry and does slow, expensive damage. Hank Delano has pulled more than a few Olympia crowns off Houston chimneys over the years, and the story is almost always the same: the metal has corroded at the seam or the concrete has spalled from years of Houston humidity and hard rain.
Which Olympia Chimney Models This Applies To
Olympia Chimney makes crowns and caps in standard flue-tile sizes, so the compatibility question usually comes down to measurement, not model name. The crown sits over the flue tile and the top course of brick, and Olympia’s product line covers standard square and rectangular flue tiles from 8″ x 8″ up to 13″ x 13″, plus a range of round flue diameters for their stainless cap systems. The dominant product line with Olympia Chimney Supply is their stainless chase cover and cap assemblies, which are built to fit over wood-framed chimney chases or masonry crowns. If you’re looking at a metal crown, the measurement that matters is the outside dimensions of the flue tile array plus the footprint of the masonry crown itself.
Here’s the thing to know before you order a replacement online: the crown has to be anchored, sealed, and flashed to the masonry below it. A crown that doesn’t leave the right overhang (a minimum 2″ drip edge past the brick line) or that’s bedded in the wrong sealant will fail again within a couple of Texas rain seasons. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Olympia Chimney, which means we have no incentive to push an OEM label over a quality aftermarket equivalent when the aftermarket part does the same job at a lower price. For Olympia specifically, the aftermarket stainless crowns from Copperfield match up well with their dimensions, and we’ll spec whichever one fits the measurements and your budget. The real variable is the condition of the masonry under the crown. If the top course of brick has already started to spall, a new crown is a band-aid until the brick gets rebuilt or parged.

Signs Your Olympia Chimney Crown Repair Is Failing
- Water staining on the ceiling or wall around the fireplace. This is the most common tell. Water enters through the failed crown, travels down the flue or the chase, and shows up inside the house. By the time you see the stain, the crown has usually been compromised for months.
- Rust streaks running down the chimney exterior. That rust is the crown’s metal lath or fasteners corroding and bleeding out. It means water is getting through the crown skin and sitting against the masonry.
- Crumbling or flaking concrete on the crown surface. Houston’s freeze-thaw cycle is mild compared to the north, but the humidity and heavy rain still cause concrete to spall, especially if the original crown was poured without enough slope to shed water.
- A gap between the crown and the flue tile. The sealant joint there dries out, shrinks, and cracks over time. Once that joint opens up, water runs straight down the outside of the flue tile and into the smoke chamber.
- You can see daylight through a crack from inside the chimney. During a sweep or inspection, the light shows up through the flue. That’s not a small crack to seal – that crown is done, and sealing it from inside won’t hold.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard Olympia Chimney-compatible crown replacement in Houston, the installed price typically runs $425 to $890. That covers removing the old crown, prepping the masonry surface, setting the new crown over the flue tile with the correct overhang, sealing and flashing it, and hauling the old material off your roof. The price moves based on a few things: how many flues the crown covers (a single flue is cheaper than a double or triple), the roof pitch and access (a steep second-story roof in the Heights costs more to work on safely than a low ranch in Spring Branch), and whether the top course of brick needs repair before the crown goes back on.
Every quote we write includes the same three lines: the exact part, the labor to install it, and the written guarantee that covers the work for one full year. If the crown we installed fails within 365 days, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s the Garrison Standard, the operating code every Garrison Partners location follows. Since 2002, the Garrison Partners family of chimney service companies has operated on the same rule: written price before the work starts, written guarantee before we leave. Hourly work that ends with “we’ll see what we find” is not how we do it.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely inspect the crown from the ground with binoculars, and you can check your attic or chase access panel for water staining after a hard Houston rain. What you shouldn’t do is get on the roof with a bucket of crown repair compound and try to patch it yourself. A crown repair is not a paint job. The surface has to be clean, the joint has to be properly opened and re-sealed, and the failure is usually structural, not cosmetic. A cracked concrete crown is still going to crack, patch or not. Put another way: if there’s water inside the chimney, the fix is a new crown and you’re going to be on a ladder with a drill, a level, sealant, and the crown itself, often two stories up and always on a surface that wants to be walked on as little as possible. We don’t think that’s a reasonable weekend project, and neither should you. Give us a call at (325) 750-6259 and tell us what you’re seeing, and Hank will tell you what it costs to fix it. The estimate is free, and the price you get is the price you pay.
FAQs
A properly installed stainless crown in Houston should last 15 to 20 years. Concrete crowns typically fail faster here, usually showing significant spalling or cracking by year 10, because the humidity and rain cycles eat at the concrete matrix and any exposed fasteners.
If the crown is metal and the damage is a single failed seam or sealant joint, yes, sometimes that’s a repair. If the crown is concrete and the cracks run through the full thickness or the surface is spalling, patching is a temporary fix at best and usually throws money away. We’ll show you which one you have before we quote anything.
Most single-flue crown replacements run from three to four hours, including teardown, cleanup, and a final check. Multiflue crowns or jobs where the top course of brick needs work push the job into a full day.
Yes. We keep the common square and rectangular sizes on the truck, along with the sealants and flashings we use. If you have an unusual flue configuration or a custom chase, we’ll measure it, verify the dimensions, and have the correct crown on the next scheduled visit. Call (325) 750-6259 and we’ll tell you what we have before we schedule the trip.
