Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Crown Repair: The Houston Owner’s Guide
We stock and install HeatShield crown repair materials in Houston, with most crown repairs running $450 to $1,200 depending on the size of the crown and how much deterioration we’re dealing with. We carry HeatShield’s CrownCoat system on the truck, and most jobs get done in a single visit. You probably landed here because you saw cracking, spalling, or a stain running down your chimney, or another sweep told you the crown needs work. The crown is the concrete slab at the very top of your chimney, and when it fails, water gets underneath it and starts tearing apart the mortar joints below.
Which HeatShield Crown Repair This Applies To
HeatShield’s CrownCoat works on the crown of any masonry chimney, regardless of whether the flue was previously coated with HeatShield’s Cerfractory material or not. It’s not tied to a specific HeatShield flue model. What matters is what surface you’re applying it to. CrownCoat is a flexible, waterproof membrane designed for concrete, masonry, and metal crowns. It won’t bond properly to painted surfaces or loose, crumbling material, so if your crown has already lost large chunks, we’ll rebuild those areas with fresh mortar first, then coat.
One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: if your flue was relined with the HeatShield Eco-Grip or HeatShield Cerfractory system, the coating stops at the crown level. CrownCoat is a separate product with a separate application, and it doesn’t interact with the flue coating. Some homeowners assume one HeatShield product covers everything. It doesn’t. The flue coating lines the inside passage, CrownCoat seals the top surface. Both have their own prep requirements.
Flint Chimney Co Houston is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with HeatShield or the manufacturer, but we work with their materials every season and we know which products hold up in Houston’s climate.

Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing
- Hairline cracks across the crown surface. Houston’s heat-rain-heat cycles expand and contract the concrete. Small cracks let water in, and that water freezes or evaporates, widening the crack each time. If you can fit a nickel edge into a crack, it’s time.
- White efflorescence staining on the brick below the crown. Water is moving through the crown, dissolving salts in the mortar, and depositing them on the brick face. If you see white chalky streaks, water’s already getting past the crown.
- Spalled or missing chunks of crown material. In older Houston homes, especially Montrose and the Heights, crowns were often poured with weak mortar rather than proper concrete. They shed pieces after a decade or two. Once you can see exposed aggregate or rebar, the crown needs a rebuild, not just a recoat.
- Damp patches on the ceiling near the chimney chase. Water that enters through the crown travels down the flue or behind the chase. By the time you see ceiling damage, the crown has been compromised for a while.
- Bits of concrete in the firebox or on the smoke shelf. Gravity does what gravity does. Crown material that flakes off sometimes falls inward, especially after heavy rain loosens it.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, a HeatShield CrownCoat repair on a standard single-flue chimney runs $450 to $800 installed. A larger or badly deteriorated crown that requires rebuilding sections first runs $800 to $1,200. If you have a multi-flue crown or unusual chimney dimensions in an older home, say in Montrose or River Oaks, you’re looking at the higher end or possibly above it.
Those are installed prices. They include grinding or patching loose material, applying the CrownCoat membrane, and sealing the gap between the flue tile and the crown, which is where a lot of water sneaks in. Every job gets a written price before we touch anything, and the repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things from the ground or a ladder if you’re comfortable with heights. Look for cracks wider than a credit card, missing chunks, or staining. If you’re on a steep roof, stay off it. Houston’s rain makes tile and shingle roofs slick, and a fall from roof height changes your whole life.
What goes wrong with DIY crown repair is prep. Most people buy a bucket of sealant, smear it over failing material, and call it done. The sealant cracks within a season because it’s bonded to debris, not solid crown. HeatShield CrownCoat is a professional product that requires proper surface prep to perform. If you want to know what you’re dealing with, call (325) 750-6259 and tell us what you’re seeing. Tell me what you’re seeing, I’ll tell you what it costs to fix it.
FAQs
A properly prepped HeatShield CrownCoat application on a Houston chimney typically lasts 10 to 15 years before it needs reapplication. The flexible membrane handles thermal movement better than rigid sealants, but Houston UV and humidity eventually degrade any surface coating. Call (325) 750-6259 if you want us to assess your specific crown’s condition.
It depends on how much material is still sound. If the crown has hairline cracks and minor spalling but the base slab is intact, CrownCoat repair works well. If large sections have broken off or the crown has separated from the flue tile, a rebuild plus CrownCoat gets you a lasting fix. We’ll tell you which one you need based on what we see, and the price is in writing before work starts.
Most HeatShield CrownCoat repairs on a standard single-flue Houston chimney take 2 to 4 hours on-site. That includes prep, application, and a recheck of the seal. Larger rebuilds can take a full day.
Yes. We keep HeatShield CrownCoat and the standard prep materials on the truck, along with supplies for our other professional-grade brands like DuraFlex and Gelco. When we see a Houston chimney with a failed crown, we can typically do the repair on the first visit, not schedule a follow-up.
