HeatShield Chimney Repair in Houston: What to Know First
HeatShield chimney repair in Houston typically runs $900 to $2,400 for a standard Cerfractory flue restoration, depending on flue size and access. We’re Flint Chimney Co Houston, an independent HeatShield service provider, and we complete most HeatShield repairs in one or two visits, with a written price before any work starts. This page is for Houston homeowners whose HeatShield system has been flagged during an inspection, is showing visible wear, or has failed outright. You’ll get straight answers on cost, parts, and whether the repair can safely wait. Call (325) 750-6259 and Hank Delano or one of our techs will tell you what you’re actually looking at.
How HeatShield Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
HeatShield is a cerfractory flue sealant system – a cement-based material applied to the inside of a chimney flue to restore its surface and close gaps. It’s a solid product when installed correctly, but Houston’s climate and specific installation variables create predictable failure patterns. Here’s what we see in the field:
- Delamination in HeatShield’s Cerfractory Flue Sealant on unlined masonry chimneys. This is the most common failure we see in Houston’s older homes, especially in Montrose and the Heights, where chimneys were built without clay tile liners. The material separates from the underlying brick when moisture pushes through from the outside. The fix is mechanical removal of loose material and a full reapplication, not a patch job. Patching delaminated Cerfractory is how you get a second failure twelve months later.
- Improper thickness in HeatShield’s Joint Repair System on clay tile flues. HeatShield’s Joint Repair System fills gaps between clay tile sections. When an installer skimps on material or applies it too thin, the joints reopen under thermal cycling. Houston’s freeze-thaw swings are rare but real, and humid summers keep the flue damp. We remove the failed joint material, verify the surrounding tile is sound, and reapply to spec.
- Cracking at the smoke chamber transition. The smoke chamber sits between the firebox and the flue. HeatShield material applied there takes serious heat stress. We see hairline cracks that let smoke and gases into the surrounding masonry. Houston homes built in the 1960s through 1980s tend to have corbeled smoke chambers with irregular geometry – tough to coat evenly. We inspect with a camera, map the gaps, and rebuild the surface properly.
- HeatShield material applied over failing mortar joints. If the underlying chimney mortar was badly deteriorated before the HeatShield went in, the cerfractory material can’t hold. It bonds to crumbling substrate. In Houston, decades of humidity-driven mortar erosion sets this up. When this happens, we do the mortar repointing first, then reapply the HeatShield system. Sequencing matters – skip the repointing and the new coating fails again.
- Water intrusion from the crown or flashing, not the HeatShield at all. Sometimes the HeatShield looks failed, but the real problem is a cracked concrete crown or rusted flashing letting water run down the flue interior. We check the top of the chimney before touching the flue. If water’s getting in from above, no liner system holds up. Houston’s heavy afternoon thunderstorms make this a year-round issue.

Our HeatShield Chimney Repair Process
Every HeatShield job follows the same sequence, because skipping steps is how flue repairs get expensive twice. Here’s how we work in a Houston home:
- 1
Camera inspection first. We run a camera down the flue and record what we see. You’ll see the same images. If the HeatShield material is delaminating, cracked, or missing, you’ll see exactly where.
- 2
Written diagnosis and price. Before any repair work happens, you get a written price, a written scope of work, and a written statement of what the repair covers. The number you approve is the number on the invoice.
- 3
Parts decision. We use genuine HeatShield Cerfractory material when a full restoration is required. For related repair work – flashing, crown repair, repointing – we specify by job, using quality trade brands like DuraFlex for liner replacements and Gelco for waterproofing where appropriate. We’ll tell you why a specific material fits your chimney.
- 4
The repair. Surface prep, material application to manufacturer spec, and curing per the product requirements. We don’t rush cure times in humid Houston weather.
- 5
Post-repair camera sweep. We run the camera again after the repair. You see the before and after. The repair either holds up under inspection or it doesn’t ship.
- 6
Written guarantee. Every HeatShield repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If a covered repair fails within one year, we return at no charge.

AfterWhat HeatShield Chimney Repair Costs in Houston
Here’s the straight picture on pricing in the Houston market. A HeatShield Joint Repair on a single-story clay tile flue typically runs $900 to $1,400. A full Cerfractory flue restoration usually lands between $1,800 and $2,400 for a standard masonry chimney. A smoke chamber repair with HeatShield material adds $400 to $700. Two-story homes run higher because of scaffolding and roof access – add 15 to 25 percent. The big price movers are flue height, flue cross-section, and how much prep work the substrate requires. If we can’t see a problem on camera, we won’t recommend the repair. Call (325) 750-6259 for a free estimate, and we’ll put the exact number in writing before any work starts.

FAQs
The HeatShield manufacturer warranty applies to the material itself, and our work carries our own written 365-Day Done Right Promise – if a covered repair fails within one full year, we return at no charge. We’re an independent HeatShield service provider, not an authorized dealer, so warranty claims on the material go through the manufacturer, but our labor guarantee is on paper before we start. Call (325) 750-6259 and we’ll explain exactly what’s covered.
Most HeatShield repairs take one full day on site, with cure time factored into a follow-up visit for the post-repair camera inspection. Humid Houston weather can extend cure times slightly, so we schedule the final check once the material has properly set. You’ll have a written timeline before we start.
If the underlying clay tiles are still structurally sound and the HeatShield delamination is isolated, we repair it. If the tiles are cracked, shifted, or missing, we’ll show you the camera footage and recommend a stainless liner, usually DuraFlex. The decision gets made on camera evidence, not on margin.
When a HeatShield restoration is the right repair, we use genuine HeatShield Cerfractory material. For work outside the flue – flashing, crowns, waterproofing – we specify what fits the job, including DuraFlex and Gelco, and tell you why.
Get a Level 2 camera inspection before you agree to any repair. Home inspectors can’t see inside the flue the way a camera can, and we’ve seen plenty of HeatShield systems flagged that were actually fine. Call (325) 750-6259 and we’ll run the camera and show you what’s actually there.
